Title: Dissecting Mr. Grissom
Author: kosmickway
Characters/Pairing: GSR; GCR; general fic
Rating: PG for alcohol use, references to drugs, sex, and stripping
Disclaimer: I don't own them (after all, I'm not CBS) but they sure as hell own me. Summary: Cath and Sara discuss Grissom over drinks.
Author's Note: References to Gris and Cath's romantic past are not canon (obviously) but come from a wonderful fic by [livejournal.com profile] theohara called "The Wall" in which she imagined a complex romantic past for them. I tend to use this AU version of events for Cath and Gris rather than show canon ... more interesting. ("The Wall" can be found on the GSR homepage under "Favorite Fics" for anyone interested in a great all around character study of Grissom).
Complete or WiP?: Complete

Catherine slugged back the last of her martini and wandered over to Sara’s kitchen counter to get another.

“Good martinis.”

“Good gin makes good martinis,” Sara answered. “Have another.”

“After a day like this one it’ll take at least two more to take the edge off.” Catherine poured another into her glass and perched on the couch next to her companion. “What is it you were asking me?”

“I wouldn’t even be asking if it weren’t for the fact that I have a majorly alcoholic beverage in my hand,” Sara confessed. “Here it is again. You and Grissom. What’s the deal?”

Catherine laughed. “What makes you think there’s any ‘deal’ between us?”

“C’mon, Catherine, I’m not an idiot.”

“No, but I’m definitely detecting a hint of jealousy.”

Sara raised her glass and nodded. “Touche. There is, in face, some of that there which is, again, something I will admit only under duress ... or martinis.” She met the other woman’s eyes. “You guys dated, right?”

Catherine laughed so hard this time she nearly spilled her drink. “Gil and I? No. We never dated. Not in the strictest sense of the word. He picked me up at a club one night and I went back to his place. After he got his legs back under him we ended up talking about forensics– which, to that point, I had never heard of. He saw some untapped potential in me and encouraged me to study. He loaned me some books. I came back next week for more books and we just kept going that way.”

“But you slept with him?”

“Sara, I was stripping and turning the occasional trick. It was a job. If I didn’t have a habit then I certainly had one after I met Eddie. I wasn’t in any shape to turn down a relatively normal looking guy who was offering me cash for a little companionship.”

“So, that would be a yes.”

“That would be a yes. We slept together. Many times. And knowing you, Sara, I don’t think that bothers you as much as the idea that I had some great love affair with Gil. I didn’t.” Cath sipped her drink. “I love him as a friend, a brother. He’s one of the most wonderful men I’ve ever known. We’ve been through a lot together, some good, some bad. He saw the bad things in Eddie long before I ever did but he never bothered to tell me he thought I was making a mistake in marrying him. That’s something I have a lot of trouble forgiving him for. But he also stood by my side when things went horrible in my marriage.”

“He’s a good man,” Sara said quietly.

“He’s a good friend,” Catherine corrected. “Did he ever tell you that he was my Lamaze partner when my husband was too busy or stoned to remember to come to class?”

“Seriously?” Sara couldn’t get the image out of her head– cool, detached Grissom, arms around Catherine, his hands on her belly, their heads bent together as they talked and laughed nervously.

“He took me to the hospital when I went into labor and then tracked down Eddie, sobered him up, and ran him to the hospital so that he’d be there when his daughter was born.”

“He means a lot to you.”

“Of course he does. And he always will. But not the way you’re thinking. I love Gil, Sara, but I'll never love him the way that you do.”

Sara finished off her martini and got up to pour another. Emboldened by the easy chatter between herself and the formidable Catherine she found herself asking, “So, how was he? In bed I mean?”

Catherine’s eyes flashed wickedly. “When we got started together– just average. By the time we were done– incredible.”

Sara raised an eyebrow. “Sounds like someone’s bragging.”

Catherine giggled. “Oh, hell, Sara, he didn’t learn it from me! I don’t know where he got it, actually. I think he did a whole lot of reading.” She leaned forward and dropped her voice into a conspiratorial whisper. “I had the best sex of my life with Gil Grissom.”

Sara choked on her drink. “The best– with Gris?”

“Oh yeah. The best. With Gris.” Catherine shut her eyes and a lazy smile played over her lips as she thought about it. “Five times. Five earth-shattering, soul-shaking times. It was unbelievable. The man can do things with his mouth that I never–“ She stopped, grinning. “Well, you’ll find out for yourself.”

“Right.” Sara took a deep swallow of her drink. “When Greg starts dressing in three piece suits is the day Gris and I land in bed together.”

Catherine met Sara’s eyes, very serious. “He loves you. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it out. You’re the only ones who don’t see it.”

Sara shook her head. “Look, I’ll admit to having had a crush on Grissom since, well, forever, but it’s never been reciprocated. He’s happiest with his bugs and his books.”

“No, he’s happiest when he’s with you. I’ve seen the way he looks at you.”

“And how is that?”

“Like a starving man staring at a five course dinner. He wants you, Sara, far more than he ever wanted me. Trust me on this. I know Gil– I’ve known him for almost ten years now. When he looks at you it’s obvious that everything else disappears.”

END.
